Here's the Week 7 verbal 'writing' task to help with 11+ Creative Writing at home!
I hope weeks 1 to 6 have been helpful.
I hope weeks 1 to 6 have been helpful.
And, as last week, the printable version of this post is in the FILES section of this page, or the link is in the chat below.
These weekly posts are to help children develop their writing skills with short and snappy verbal exercises.
Verbal tasks can help your child to think on their feet and support them in orally rehearsing an idea before putting pen to paper (great if your child's writing often has missing words or sometimes doesn't make sense).
Here's another set of three short tasks to try.
Here's another set of three short tasks to try.
This week's setting is … a cave.
All three tasks use the picture on this post, and there are vocabulary suggestions to help.
Task 1
Say (or write) a sentence describing the cave from the outside using a simile.
Example using some of the vocabulary listed below: The dark cave looms like a gaping maw; its rocky walls are shrouded in mystery and the unknown.
Task 2
Say (or write) a sentence explaining the shadows inside the cave using personification.
Example using some of the vocabulary listed below: Shadows dance and whisper within its depths, hinting at forgotten secrets.
Task 3
Say (or write) a sentence to contrast the bright and friendly cave entrance and the darkness inside.
Example using some of the vocabulary listed below: But just beyond the cave's threshold, a radiant entrance beckons with a warm and inviting glow; it's as if the cave and its entrance exist in two different worlds, each holding its own allure and promise.
Vocabulary suggestions
Metaphors: walls shrouded in mystery and the unknown, the cave and entrance exist in two different worlds, each world offers its own allure and promise, a black hole, the cave’s jaws
Simile: like a gaping maw, like an open mouth
Personification: shadows dance and whisper, hinting at forgotten secrets, a radiant entrance beckons, secrets call, shadows beckon, darkness cloaks
Warmth/friendliness: with a warm and inviting glow , sunlight streams through the opening, bathing it in honey light, a golden embrace
Cold/unfriendly: foreboding darkness within, ice-cold stare, an icy touch, its arctic breath
Note: Definition of ‘maw’ (noun) = the jaws or throat of a voracious animal
Example: … a gigantic wolfhound with a fearful, gaping maw
An example of how this could be written in a paragraph
The dark cave looms like a gaping maw; its rocky walls are shrouded in mystery and the unknown. Within its depths, shadows dance and whisper, hinting at forgotten secrets. But just beyond the cave's threshold, a radiant entrance beckons with a warm and inviting glow. Sunlight streams through the opening, bathing the surrounding landscape in a golden embrace and offering a stark contrast to the foreboding darkness within. It's as if the cave and its entrance exist in two different worlds, each holding its own allure and promise.
I hope you enjoy the challenges.
