Quick 10-minute writing skills task - opening adjectives
12.12.24
This week, your child can try using opening adjectives.
Week 5 – Using opening adjectives (adjectives to start the sentence)
A simple way to give variety to sentence writing is to take an adjective and put it in a different place in the sentence.
It’s called ‘opening adjectives’.
Step 1: Take this sentence (it goes with the image on this post):
The mighty and majestic eagle watched and waited.
Take the two adjectives and put them at the beginning of the sentence, adding a comma after the adjectives.
Mighty and majestic, the eagle watched and waited.
Top tip: One common error is that the children do not notice that the noun/pronoun is just after the opening adjectives and comma, so this is a teaching point.
Step 2: Try another one. Answer at the end of this post.
The arid and angry wind whipped up the sand, circling the dunes.
Step 3: And try this final one! Answer at the end of this post.
The sly and determined grey desert wolves lay in wait for the eagle.
ANSWERS:
Arid and angry, the wind whipped up the sand, circling the dunes.
Sly and determined, the grey desert wolves lay in wait for the eagle.
